Hog producers defend their care of animals

Re: Spin, not reform: The Canadian livestock industry goes for public
relations, Issues & Ideas, Aug. 18
On behalf of Canadian hog producers, I take great exception to Stephanie Brown and John Youngman’s comments regarding our industry’s efforts in animal care.
Not only are we pleased to participate in the new National Farm Animal Care Council (which includes representation from a variety of stakeholder groups and not solely the livestock industry), but we are also very proud of our own new initiative, and the efforts we have made over the past three years to develop a sound, transparent welfare program that demonstrates to our customers that we take excellent care of our animals.
Our Animal Care Assessment tool was developed with animal care researchers, hog producers, representatives from provincial pork associations, and government. It was then reviewed, and its implementation supported, by the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors and Canadian Meat Council.
If anyone is putting a “spin” on the Canadian animal care story, it is
certainly not us.
