“Free-range eggs rule the roost ” (Gazette, July 30).
This is an interesting and generally informative article, but it contains some factual errors. The most glaring being that its claim that some hens in cages are given hormones.

We’re fortunate to live in a country with so many food choices, in a world where many have little food at all. But many of the statements in the article on eggs need some perspective from farmers.

Every day counts for chicken farmers

When it comes to what’s called broiler chickens, the ones that are processed into food, every day counts. In just five-ish weeks, they hatch from eggs, grow and find their way to our dinner plates. That brief time period is fascinating from a nutrition perspective, because a bird must grow up incredibly fast and stay extremely healthy to be ready for marketing in about 32 days.

China’s animal feed tainted with melamine

BEIJING — The industrial chemical melamine is commonly added to animal feed in China to make it appear higher in protein, state media reported Thursday, in what appeared to be a tacit admission by the government that contamination is widespread in the country’s food supply.

Poultry farms guard against virus

There are rules around David Blackwood’s turkey barns. There’s a mandatory chemical boot wash on the way into the Wetaskiwin facility, about 30 minutes south of Edmonton. A change of boots is supplied if you’ve been in another barn recently, even if it was one of Blackwood’s. And if you don’t absolutely have to enter his barns, stay out.
